Well, #"MgO"# is a basic oxide, so it would react with acids. Refractory furnace linings like #"MgO"# are supposed to resist high temperatures, be chemically inert, and have specific ranges for their thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion.

They can't be chemically inert in the presence of acids if they are basic oxides.
