Energy and matter are not the same thing, and no one can correctly prove that they are.
Matter can hold energy. Matter is something tangible. Energy cannot be touched.
When matter does work on other matter, energy can be transferred. You can also transfer matter if some residual molecules on your hand are sticky. However, that matter is not energy taken as energy (a philosophical phrase, "qua"). It is matter. A distinctly different observable.
